Special Macintosh Boot Sequences

Special Boot Sequences

This is a list of special boot sequences that enable service access features on the Mac and may help in various repairs

Start from a CD

  1. Turn off the computer
  2. Turn power on and immediately insert a CD
  3. Hold down the 'C' key

Force Eject a CD

  1. Shutdown the computer
  2. Hold down the mouse button during restart

PMU Reset

  1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
  2. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard.
    Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
  3. Wait 5 seconds.
  4. Press the Power button to restart the computer.

Open Firmware

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. opt-cmd-O-F, press power
  3. Type:
    1. reset-nvram
    2. (set-defaults)
    3. reset-all

Reset PRAM

  1. Turn computer Off
  2. Switch mac on, and then hold down cmd-alt-P-R and let mac chime 3+ times then let go.

Safe Mode

Start up in Safe Mode .. this will run the "Repair Disk" utility.

  1. Be sure the computer is turned off.
  2. Now press the power button.
  3. Just after you hear the startup tone (NOT BEFORE), press and hold down the shift key.
  4. Now release the shift key when you see the start up screen with the gray background with the Apple logo and the progress indicator.
  5. During the startup, you will see "Safe Boot" on the Mac OS X startup screen.
  6. To leave the Mac OS X Safe Mode just restart your Mac normally, without holding any keys during the startup period.

Choose Startup Disk
